New bridge of some benefits to cyclists and walkers travelling between Eveleigh South and Wilson St, but Evelink would be much better, direct to Alexandria from Carriageworks. It is in the North Eveleigh development plan but only as a “to be done by others” I believe.
I think people overlook ownership, span of control and project risk aversion. A rail bridge is managed by rail asset managers. They want the least they can build. Lip service to connecting communities bs lower asset management costs. This bridge has been discussed since at least 2001. It was a development condition of the Eveleigh workshops. As to revenue, there are many ungated stations. Revenue leakage is minimal because the incentive is to tap at both ends and to get weekly discounts. The poor team doing the workshops prosecuted many great arguments for better infra. So did the City of Sydney. But the Station Access Program pushed it back down. I suspect if the current govt was in when this finally started they would have a more aggressive track possession to shorten the installation time and cut costs!
This is easily explained by major infrastructure projects not appropriately considering the function of a piece of infrastructure. I'm talking about specifically looking at how people use and could use something in that place. They often never stray from what the thing does currently so miss out on opportunities.
Speaking of transit station design, I may have discovered the Best One I
Have Ever Seen. No, it is not the Washington, D.C. Metrorail system. It's in
Stockholm, the relatively new Odenplan regional rail station, built below
and connected to the much older Odenplan metro station. The regional
transit authority SL built this station to provide rail system congestion
relief (yes, there is such a thing) and put the regional rail trains on a
separate path through Stockholm.
By U.S. standards (think Dulles Rail, Purple Line, East Side Access, Second
Avenue Subway), it was relatively cheap even though it involved a lot of
tunneling.
